Vietnam: Land prices soar in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city
"Land and house prices continued to surge after prices had rocketed the year before. Land and house prices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City rose two- to five-fold in the last two years... Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City authorities issued decisions to prevent land and housing speculation in April and May... While land prices are soaring and more land is needed to build new housing areas, millions of square metres of land in prime locations of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City has been lying unused for years because the holders of the land-use rights cannot afford to build."

Its the continuing tragedy of both the socialist and the geoist movements that socialism has failed to comprehend and internalise the georgist insight that the economic rent of land and other natural resources is to be recouped via direct taxation on land values, which would raise revenue for public infrastructure development and at the same time achieve efficient site utilisation. You would think it was a no-brainer as point one of the communist manifesto refers to land and rent, and 'land nationalisation' is a key platform of every communist movement. One of the key tasks of the geonomists is to introduce and entrench this insight into all socialist, Progressive and Green movements.
