France calls for Heads of State, Government to attend meeting of UN Security Council
Official text, Security Council debate re latest Iraq Blix report. It seems to me a sign of Blair's desperation and yet another diplomatic blunder from the Bush Administration that President Bush at his major press conference yesterday insisted that the vote on the 'second resolution' be held. It is unlikely now that it will be passed; therefore it is in the interests of the US that it not be put only to be defeated, that would only be a further dramatic rebuff to the United States. Blair will have to be left to hang if the war is to proceed. As if we haven't had enough high drama and diplomatic disaster for the United States, what would the effect be if the heads of government of France, Germany, Russia, China and others Security Council members turned up in person to vote down the US/UK war resolution? President Chirac, Chancellor Schroeder and whoever else can be rounded up should most certainly attend the the decisive Security Council meeting. Having decided to take the bold and historic step to oppose the Americans' war plans it is in their interests that they attain the maximum international publicity for the decisive gesture. This will help mobilise world public opinion against a path of aggressive warmaking which the United States will find impossible to sustain.
